As a socio-cultural organization and a stakeholder in the comity of Nigeria’s ethnic nationalities, we believe that you will appreciate our resolve to discountenance violent dispositions despite sustained psychological injuries melted on our people by concerned agencies for this long.
Rt.Honorable Dimeji Bankole,
House of Representatives,
Hon. Patrick Obahiagbon,
Member, House of Representatives,
Oredo Federal Constituency,
Three Armed Zone,
22 February 2008
A Case of Appropriation of Edo Oil wells by Ondo and Delta States, in Conivance with the National Boundary Commission and Revenue Mobilization and Fiscal Commission In appreciation of the renewed mood of peaceful disposition, religious tolerance and respect for the Rule of Law, which are being reinforced by President Umaru Musa Yar Adua GCFR, we (Members and Trustees of Benin National Congress) wish to humbly and most respectfully present to you the aforementioned issue that has deprived Edo State Government and by extension Edo people Billions of Naira for fourteen years running. This scenario has in no small measure denied our people dividends of natural resources and good governance.
As a socio-cultural organization and a stakeholder in the comity of Nigeria’s ethnic nationalities, we believe that you will appreciate our resolve to discountenance violent dispositions despite sustained psychological injuries melted on our people by concerned agencies for this long. We are further convinced that your Lordship will do justice to this petition like the previous one over the alleged looting of our Artifacts sent to you in November 2007.
It is a well-known fact of history that the Bight of Benin is located in Benin territory, and the oil exploration carried out in the Oil Wells that are located in this area cannot be legitimate revenues of Ondo and Delta States whom are neighbors within the North and South of the Bight of Benin.
This is the case Mr. Speaker, and we sincerely believe that the resort to intellectual dialogue and legal debate on this issue, with the intent of exposing the true position is not a sign of weakness,(as some people would prefer armed-struggle as a tool for the enforcement of their rights) but a course towards peace and harmony.
At the last Count, the Governor of Edo State, Prof. (Sen.) Osareimhen Osunbor has decried the ugly development a number of times through the print and electronic media, so much so that our people would have resorted to armed militancy if not for our intervention (an assurance that the injustice would be redressed in no distance time).
Its note worthy to state that a lot of persons (of Edo extraction and elsewhere must have influenced and benefited from this illegality)
We humbly request for the following demands on behalf of our people.
That the Honorable Speaker or the House Committee on Petroleum and Gas pay an assessment visit to the boundaries of Edo State especially the Bight of Benin.
That the Directors General of National Boundary Commission as well as the Revenue Mobilization and Fiscal Commission are made to testify before an Investigative Committee of the House over the allegation of illegal ceding of Edo Oil Wells to Ondo and Delta States.
That any relevant Officer (s) or agencies considered in the House opinion be invited to testify before the Investigative Committee of the House over this petition.
That if the findings and recommendations are favorable to our arguments, relevant agencies be made to tender an unreserved apology to Edo people for the psychological trauma they have been contending with since the pendency of the illegality.
That in furtherance to prayer four (4) above, the House should exercise its discretion in determining compensation to Edo State Government.
For and on behalf of all Members, Trustees and the good people of Edo State.
